Studio U mates went on a site visit to Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) to make a short video to present at Tobe Programme. We discussed hard which room or collection to select as V&A has such a vast collection on display. 20 Years in London, but I still have not see all the rooms at V&A!!!
Islamic Middle East room was selected as we wanted to show the Japanese potters another culture’s way of using clay but also to further inspire and share the beauty of Islamic art in many forms. As makers we learn and get our inspirations from not just ceramics!
Yasuko and Valeria were talking in details of selected pieces with the room as we only 30 minutes air time during the session. I was the camera person for the day.
Here is the link of the full video—- V&A TRIP
I have been very fortunate to participate in Tobe Programme to meet and share our common interest in ceramics. Tobe is a small town in Iyo District, Ehime, Japan, where is it know for its porcelain tableware with blue, cobalt oxide, decorations. There is so much skill and history in their ceramic to be cherished.
It was all online, given the current situation!, but it was enough to share and learn from each other from such a distance away!
A bit of a last minute decision to do a Christmas pop-up at a talented jewellery designer, Linnie Mclarty’s shop in London, Victoria Park Road. Valeria, Yasuko and I will show our latest work made from our Hackney Wick studio.
Please drop in if you are passing through or in need of a last minute Christmas present!

A terracotta planter I made that I stared at a small white section (white slip) not knowing what to doddle. Then I came across this book by chance through another maker in my studio building and saw an image I liked. Inspiration comes from so many different sources!
Studio U made a very last minute decision to join the outdoor Christmas market hosted by Barge East by River Lea. I will be joined by my studio mates, Yasuko and Valeria. Please do drop in to see what is under those wrappers! See you and stay safe everyone!
Please do visit to see some of our works and to visit Kate Malone’s London studio.
Of course there will be homemade mince pies and wine!
It was quite an indulging trip to Vienna with the main aim to see art and visit artist studios. It was not disappointing and so much to see!

A few highlights from this year’s Venice biennale. It was fun and great to find new artists but nothing blew me away. It was still worth visiting!
Here we are again!
End of the year and this year has been super super busy… I set up my first studio in Hackney Wick, London, had a long trip home learning a new pottery technique and Kate has taken me as her assistant! Many good news to share.
I am glad that my studio is able to participate in SELFMADE Open Studio + Pop-up Market among other artists and makers in Hackney Wick on the 8th December from 11am until late. Please do pop in to meet the makers and pick up items for your unfinished(?!) Christmas shopping or just treat yourself to something nice!

What caught my eye this time in Korea!
I went home to South Korea as my regular visit to see my family and friends this autumn. But I had a special trip to southern part of Korea, Hwasun (30 minutes from Kwangju) to learn an old traditional of Onggi making. Onggi jars are vessels that hold food items such as kimchi, soy sauce, soybean paste, chilli paste or such as gains as they are breathing pots.
I so gratefully stayed at Hyangjong Oh’s studio who taught me and housed me and my partner for 3 weeks whilst we were there! What a generous man he is, Master Oh!
I have set up my own studio in Hackney Wick. I worked hard for the last 6 weeks setting up, finding studio mates and it is finally all there. I still have a few more things to do but I have new studio mates starting from today! This is so exciting and a little bit daunting, but if I'm honest I think it is all going to be fine!
I left the open access studio, Turning Earth, as I needed more freedom and space to do more experimental work, which was not possible at a large shared studio. However, it had offered a space to horn my basic skills and meet some nice people whom I will be working at my studio with.
There are so many possibilities that I could make it happen with the space and the people I have met along and way with new people I will meet in the months to come.
I have named my studio 'Studio U', the top is Korean, English and last is Chinese that will give meaning to 'U'. The Chinese character is read 'ryu' and means flow as it contains water and river in its shape. So I thought flow, change, process, journey that leads to destruction then to creation. I think it is quite fitting for a makers space which will do all of that!
SOOOO my one day work experience at Kate's Balls pond studio last summer has become a year long internship, which I felt very fortunate to be offered the opportunity. I have learnt a lot and met some very nice people at the studio. I am not sure what will happen after August, but I hope I could stay on to work for her.
